Implementing this check may be a good idea, because currently this causes very subtle errors - the comment in the example will have an undefined ownerDocument.

`@private` may work to hide the internal properties and types.

I've moved over to Microsoft api-extractor / api-documenter, which seems to work well. TODO's at the top still apply.

That's a lot of code changes, I'll try to take a look in more detail later. Am I correct in assuming that the array / object will only retain reference...
