I'm also trying this out at home. I've done a few sensor installs on Pi3s. The logstash install on the sensor talks to elasticsearch on the web server. Then Kibana...
If there are any errors at all (even if's running) logstash won't parse any messages. I had mentioned this in another thread but the current version of logstash no longer...
