Does it work with elastic-search 1.3.1?

Updating the elastic-search version in the pom.xml caused even more wreckage: ``` 1.6 UTF-8 1.3.1 ```

Node Version Problem

**aws** is forcing us to update past node 8 so this is hurting us badly.

We had the same issue reading from `secretsmanager` but also reading from s3 today. Our lambdas are running in a VPC so that is likely the issue in our case....
