Same problem here. Did this ever work before? Would be nice if I didnt have to rebuild all my STL files ..
Just had the same error message on multiple machines in multiple configurations (Ubuntu 16/18.04, kinetic vs melodic, different kernels, x86 and arm). Restarting the roscore fixed it for me.
