If this were to be implemented in Rust, the [spark-xml](https://github.com/databricks/spark-xml) data source Databricks created for Spark might be worth borrowing some ideas from. It uses a [StAX](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StAX) approach to XML...

Would love to see this get merged.
