Ah, fair enough, thanks for the response. I have a workaround to get the behaviour I wanted. Maybe people hitting the same issue will find this issue in their googling...
Make sure you are using the right version of pygatt, BLEKey is using a different one as documented in the README here https://github.com/linklayer/BLEKey/tree/master/client.

I don't know yet, but I plan to work on it. I am hoping to minimise the differences between the images (the kubler definitions) and the builders, and just running...
