I quickly checked the relevant code and I see we haven't changed anything in 6 years there. I'm wondering if this is something to do with your snapshot Emacs version.
I tried reproducing this locally with Emacs 28 and the option works as expected. Now I'm even more certain that's something to do with Emacs 29.
No idea about this issue - never used tab-bar, but I assume it's using some overlays to simulate the tabs and I've seen plenty of glitches with them.

Looks good, failing CI aside.
I can't reproduce this, but I've also seen occasionally weird random errors about compilation warnings. No idea what causes them, though.
Btw, here's how this looks in `easy-motion`:  Seems to me this is the direction we should be heading with `ace-jump`.

So, are we going to do something with this PR or not? I'm favor of just merging it, given that a comprehensive fix is unlikely to happen any time soon.
