Strand information for coverage

Hi,

When using bedtools coverage in "-s" mode to force strandedness, how does bedtools figure out strand information of the read? (-a .bed -b .bam) Would this command be able to figure out if I am supplying bam file generated from mapping single end or paired ed files?
