fixed it. The .bashrc needs this line somewhere in the setup it was set to: export GAZEBO_MODEL_PATH=~/ardupilot_gazebo/models needs to be this: export GAZEBO_MODEL_PATH=~/ardupilot_gazebo/models:${GAZEBO_MODEL_PATH}
