If it helps, I made the changes to fix http://github.andrewt.net/thingometer so that's a good place to start if you can't reproduce the error in your own code.
I don't know if this is @chrismcclellan's same issue, but I find that symlinks are treated as files regardless of where they point — if I have a symlink `foo`...
