Yes I agree this can be a solution. Only issue that it requires many calls which might be slow to compute the output. Still worth to try!
Agree. I also see as a second option there are public apis available which at least give you season total data with game played so possible to calculate season average.
I found out that you can use roster resource.players and actually get weekly total data for given team's each player.  In my case this seems to be helpful!
I also have the same problem. The behavior is quite unexpected and it is likely to effect many apps.
