The source of that number is in the `ne_10m_geography_regions_elevation_points` file in Natural Earth. We need to fix the bug there first. Tracking that issue in https://github.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/issues/184

I think here's an example of what we lost when we removed the slope shade. A user sent in this example of some terrain features that seem to have disappeared...

Yes, these are OSM borders at that zoom. If we figure out a fix here, we should also see if we can apply it to Toner, too.

Sorry @LonelyPilgrim, it has been a long time since any of us at Stamen have tried using this code. It's many years old and we don't really use it anymore...
