The max frequency is always half for the sample rate, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist%E2%80%93Shannon_sampling_theorem
UPX (the tool Spek uses to compact binaries) is broken on Sierra, they are working on it: https://github.com/upx/upx/issues/4 I'll re-package Spek after UPX is fixed.
Unfortunately right now I don't have access to a mac to make a new build, but I'll try to figure something out in the next week or two.

If any of you still have access to hardware with a pre-Sierra MacOS version installed, could you try the pre-release version of Spek on it? I doubt it will work,...
This should be fixed on `master` with 5a331f5f923d99060befbf1a90668a507e4e2fa7, the upcoming version 0.8.6 will include the fix.
