Why is it not possible to mount r/w on multiple clients? It's a block device, it should be possible as it is with iSCSI to do this.

I think it matches precisely with the iSCSI scenario - they are both block devices from the OS perspective. You could equally run a shared filesystem over iSCSI or NBD...
