I just came across this issue again, forgetting the previous attempts. I was confused by some (newer?) AWS documentation which states that `credential_source` is supported by the AWS CLI. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/credref/latest/refdocs/setting-global-credential_source.html...

I experienced this bad performance also, but it got much better when I upgraded to the latest session-manager-plugin (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/systems-manager/latest/userguide/session-manager-working-with-install-plugin.html). It may have been commit 346cb4d3a714c788b3c9ce1d6d99a4d3fd5bcf87 that fixed this
