i'm happy to look into using scientific notation for delta_ELBO_mean. i don't know how to test for this though... do either of you know how to test for these sorts...

is michael's refactor comment (betanalpha commented on Jul 10, 2015) relevant? or do we need to make some further change to `write_iteration`?
