Should at least preserve all comments now. Groups are strange because ultimately groups are just syntactic sugar for separate items, but while it's cleaner to associate comments with items, items...

Looks like we need to use tree-associated comments after all, due to the possibility of empty trees.

We'll see. Unfortunately it's unlikely I will have time.
