Sounds like Google are being dicks. Not much I can do. You can downgrade or try using an Android auto wireless dongle.
There is no official way to work outside of their templates afaik. Their templates are limited to putting items in a list or a grid.

It was in the old version. I might add it back eventually. My driving record is in a place where I really don't have much use for it.
It would probably be pretty easy to hide the needles/ticks. I don't think I would make a new style for every theme.
