"Unset" here is more of a hardware term that means "zero." Since registers are all initialized to zero, by default the flag bits are all unset.

No, there wasn't any requirement on raw markdown. Just a requirement to keep the barrier to entry low, which mdbook still satisfies. The only reason it hasn't been done yet...
@Voxelot Cynic seems to be taking its sweet time releasing v2. Would it be worth it to fork it and release a forked cynic we can use ourselves?

Run lots of benchmarks with as clean a setup as possible. That's really the only way.
The implementation can just choose some sane values. There's no reason to pollute the specs with that.
