I'm working in the [exit event](https://github.com/i3/i3/pull/2335). It's done, I just need to do some cleanup.
I don't know if it is possible to fix this. I think we should just deprecate the `restart` command instead. I've started [this issue](https://github.com/i3/i3/issues/1446) on i3 for that.
