This certainly would be useful, but it seems like it would be very difficult to implement.

If we want to formally deprecate this style, then I think JOSM should give warnings about it. But until then I think it should allow it.

Same symptoms as described, using latest proton experimental. I can provide more details if I know what will be useful.

I could work on this, I'll take a closer look tomorrow.
