Internationalisation of text fields

Open quasicomputational opened this issue 5 years ago • 3 comments

The text fields (title and description) are monolingual and in an unspecified language. Even if multiple languages + browser selection of which one to display would be overkill, the language should be indicable to allow proper display (as matters for, e.g., CJK).

I'm not sure what advantage providing the display language would provide. Unicode allows for encoding the text direction. Notifications properly display CJK and RTL languages, and only the string is provided.

  1. If the language is known, the UA can read it aloud, offer translation, etc.

  2. Han unification. The same Unicode codepoint can render quite differently between lang=zh-Hans, lang=zh-Hant and lang=ja, possibly producing unacceptable results if the language information is discarded.

For a detailed set of example use cases, please read the article Use cases for bidi and language metadata on the Web.
