I tried to set Update mode to When parent visible but it did not work. I tried it with SubViewport being a child and a sibling of the Sprite3D.
I'd really like to incorporate tis-3d-additions into the base mod. The license seems to be compatible.

Can confirm - resetting the device is a workaround. Still no clue why.
