See also ValveSoftware/Proton#8206, particularly https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/8206#issuecomment-2451446938 which fixed it for me on the bleeding edge branch of Proton Experimental. Will try GE9-18 next.

So doing a lot more digging, it seems as if this is an issue with DKVX, specifically on NVidia cards. doitsujin/dxvk#1984 goes into detail how DKVX does not free VRAM...
