Monterey (12.0.1) install fails with release 2.0.9 : "A required firmware update cannot be installed" on Mac Pro 2009
I have tried to install macOS Monterey 12.0.1 with the latest Big Mac 2.0.9 release on my Mac Pro 2009 (firmware updated to Mac Pro 5.1 v144.0.0.0.0 and AMD RX580 metal compatible GPU). The install failed after the first reboot with the following error : "A required firmware update cannot be installed".
run the preinstall or create a boot disk using Bigmac2. Also use Open Core Legacy Patcher.
Many thanks for your answer. However, I don't understand what I should do. Before the issue occured, I had created a Monterey install disk using Bigmac 2.0.9, booted with it, and run the preinstall and started the installation. That was only after the reboot of the computer on my destination ssd to complete the installation process that it ails with the message : "A required firmware update cannot be installed". I am aware of Open Core Legacy Patcher but I have other isssue with it and I would really prefer the more native approach of your tool.
I have the exact thing on my Mac Pro 3.1. Also the required firmware update after reboot.
Yeah I'm getting the same error on my MacPro5,1 (upgraded from a 4,1). Nomorewar you have the firmware update ???
Cause I found this interesting article on the subject ->>>> https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/qm3rv0/macos_monterey_update_without_the_original_apple/
The only problem with all that is after I follow all those directions THERES STILL NO MACPRO5,1 FIRMWARE FILE (of course...) IN THE MONTEREY DISTRIBUTION !
I'm actually not upset by it ... cause that's how you learn about how all these things are put together and I think that's kind of cool even if the outcome isn't what I wanted. But anyways if anyone has something to offer up us "Mac Pro 5.1 v144.0.0.0.0" people would love it !
(I'm curious if I look in the latest release of Big Sur if there might be something?)
Another mystery. I did an upgrade from an older Catalina installation to Monterey and it worked. But what does not work is my widescreen display. The only available resolution is 800x600. @StarPlayrX do you have any suggestion how to resolve this?
OOOOOH ... @nomorewar that's super interesting about the upgrade path ... you are on a MacPro4,1 that you upgraded to a 5,1 and you went (using an SSD that was not the on originally in your macpro) from Catalina to Monterey ???? Cause I have plenty of SSDs kicking around ... and I still have my "Catalina 10.15.7/DosDude USB install stick" ...So what i'm thinking is I'll put an SSD in my macpro 5,1, load catalina, and then see if I can go to Monterey.
Just confirming that -> you are on a 'upgraded MacPro4,1 to MacPro4,1 5,1' and you went (using an SSD that was not the on originally in your MacPro4,1) from Catalina to Monterey ... Let me know please (and thank you). I got time to experiment if this helps other people out :) This is very exciting if that's the case :)

@DigitalTargit No I am on a Mac Pro 3.1. I upgraded from Catalina to Monterey with big mac2 on that Mac Pro, but this gave the required firmware update error. I then completed the install on Monterey supported Mac and then back on the Mac Pro and it worked. BUT! What I wrote above I have only a display resolution of 800x600 and can't change that. I think that have to do with that 'required firmware update' error, because after I did a clean install, the same happened with that failed required firmware update. But with that message my display was at a 800x600 resolution and I am working on a 3440x1440 resolution display. And with BigSur (also with 11.6.1) the resolution is OK and no required firmware updates needed.
BTW, I did upgrade Big Sur 11.3 to 11.6 and that went very smooth.
Thank you @nomorewar :)
You need a video card that supports Metal to use Bigmac2. I am not sure how you can only get 800x600 unless the video drivers are not working which means your video card is probably not fully supported.

I have a flashed NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2GB. Does work with Big Sur (also with 11.6.1 now). Did a fresh new Monterey install on another SSD, but without succes yet.
@nomorewar Since macOS Mojave, there is no official support for Nvidia Gpu, you should try with an Amd gpu. @StarPlayrX Do you have any clue to deal with the "firmware update" issue ?
@StarPlayrX ... no dice getting monterey on my MP5,1 (it was originally a 4,1 and I updated etc etc etc and now it's a 5,1). I still get the "A required firmware update cannot be installed" ... so I'm looking forward to your guide on how to make/integrate BigMac 2 and Open Core Legacy Patcher.
You ROCK man !
The whole thing is put on hold with no bigmac2.dmg ... Obviously I can get xcode, etc etc ... I'd rather do all this with a good build from StarPlayrX
@nomorewar ... I got it to work from your instructions !!!
@StarPlayrX / ANYONE - Can anyone give me a pointer on a video card that works in a MacPro 5,1 with Monterey THAT DOES NOT HAVE A FAN ON IT ??? Make/Model and manufacturer please so there's no ambiguity (and thank you everyone that answers). This would be super super helpful as I do audio recording and the fewer fans the better ! Thank you ! It would be great if the video card shows me all the disks I can boot from too when I power on my MacPro 5,1 and hold the option key (some video cards literally don't work until the login screen shows up!) :)
@DigitalTargit Good work ! How did you get it work ?
Here's the secret ... you got to take the disk and finish the install and I mean even all the setup questions (which I usually just skip through cause I don't want Apple tracking me) IN A COMPUTER THAT CAN BOOT MONTEREY. For me this meant doing the 1st part of the install from a micropatched USB intaller in the MacPro5,1... then that reboots and you get the firmware error ... I then take the disk out of the macpro 5,1 and put it on a machine that can boot monterey (I hooked it up via USB-C to a 2020 MBP (not an M1)), and then you boot the disk from that machine (hold down the option key,etc)... you finish the COMPLETE install ... then you put it back into the macpro 5,1 and boot it.
For me once i had monterey disk back in the MP5,1 I had hold the option key, select the montery disk, and then before I shutdown I had to tell the MP5,1 that my startup disk was the monterey disk. That was a one time caveat ... and subsequent power cycles the montery disk booted from the MP5,1 no problems.
At this point I want to get a better video card for my MP5,1 that works with Monterey and 1) doesn't have a fan and 2) will show all the disks when I hold the option key (after the apple chime). Make/Model/Manufacturer ... no ambiguities please !
@DigitalTargit Thank you, i will try it. For the GPU, unfortunately, I don't think that there is any video card without fan with Metal api compatibility to be able to work properly with Monterey. You have to use an AMD video card since Apple blocks Nvidia drivers since Mojave. You can use models from HD 7950 to RX 580. You have to check that the card is EFI compatible to be able to see the "boot screeen". However, a "Pc version" will perfectly works except for the boot screen and some others situation. Saphire was selling a Mac version off the HD 7950. You can also find on the the web a tool to flash yourself a pc version of HD 7950, HD 7970 and R9 280x to make it EFI compatible (check the manufacturer, in some cases they dont respect the "AMD standards" and the tool will not work. Saphire cards should work withoy problem). Finally, you can use a RX 580. You can find on eBay flashed one. I personally use a XFX RX 580 flashed to be EFI compatible.
@proualexandre ... do me a favor ... would this ebay item do the trick ??? 334251359898
I primarily use my mac for audio multitracking (Logic Pro) ... as long as my 2 monitors work the frame rate isn't the most critical thing to me.
@DigitalTargit Monterey will perectly works with this HD 7950. However, this is a regular pc version, so you will not able to see the boot screen. I don't know the cards from HIS so, I m not sure that the tool I was talking yesterday could work with it. See https://forum.macbidouille.com/index.php?showtopic=400618 for more infos about the EFI firmware flash tool for HD 7950 and its variations.
Actually ... this is going to sound way way crazy to you ... but I think I can micropatch monterey to work with nvidia 720 ...
What I'm thinking is taking the micropatcher -> https://github.com/alphascorp/Monterey-micropatcher/blob/main/payloads/patch-kexts.sh ... and rigging it to just do INSTALL_HD3000 ... basically change the --2011 option to just do INSTALL_HD3000
Is that works well?I have the same problem...My device is MacBook Pro 2012 mid, I try the same behavior, which Big Sur works well ,but it doesn't work on Monterey. The screen becomes very strange, and very hot if it run for a while.

The only cards I know without fans are ones that fit inside an Xserve slot.
You can get a AMD Radeon Pro WX 4100 Low Profile card that has just 1 fan and is bus powered and works on Big Sur and Monterey: https://www.newegg.com/amd-100-506008/p/N82E16814105067?item=N82E16814105067&source=region&nm_mc=knc-googleadwords-pc&cm_mmc=knc-googleadwords-pc--pla--video+cards+-+workstation-_-N82E16814105067&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2MHl-_yy9QIVNPC1Ch0bCA1XEAQYASABEgIdr_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
