No, it's not possible to manually add groups. Most of the time it's something in your network (router) that's blocking the discovery messages.
On my router the setting is called UPnP. It can also be something like MDNS/multicast etc.
I don't know about your network setup. Maybe your desktop is connected to a different router/wifi/subnet as the Chromecasts are? (and ethernet is on the same subnet)

On the option tab there's a link when a new version is available. The application calls the GitHub API when it's started. What did you have in mind?
