I'm wondering if it could be something to do with the handling of available/required/installed packages, and am thinking of changing [`packages_status`](https://github.com/ocaml/opam/pull/5982/files#diff-a657e0822f7ed4a1177c0ea985eeab221d568a0911c27f8ab07ea9e5c6e6eb23L19) to return `OpamSysPkg.status`.

Oh, good point! `nix-shell -p pkg-config openssl gmp etc...` should work (though requires a channel to be set up). An annoyance with this approach is packages from these ephemeral shells...
Ah, yes, you're correct. Assuming they haven't changed the channel, that should work quite nicely!

Ah, cool! I'm not planning to do this imminently but I may circle back here when I add journal support to https://github.com/RyanGibb/caledonia.
