I just noticed - it doesn't look like any learning from the vt tutorial or whatever is included on the checklist, just building and running the code

Also, vt's internal diagnostics seem to be perfect for feeding out to LDMS.

I remember discussing a good protocol for detecting exactly these issues. Maybe check the issue or PR in which we introduced this kind of insertion.
