Wouldn't you have the same issue if `includeInJSON` were true or an array (the other two cases in `toJSON`)? And could you add a test case for this change?

Hi Douwe! Could you describe for which scenarios this actually fixes the model hierarchy? I'm a bit worried about performance here. Calling `initializeModelHierarchy` from `addReverseRelation` shouldn't hurt too much, but...
