An attempt to attach an SLCAN transport fails mysteriously

This is on an Ubuntu VM:

It says the operation has timed out, but it is unclear why; there appears to be no relevant info in the logs.

The message won't be undefined any longer but I am yet to reproduce and fix this specific issue.
