I was thinking more about some kind of hovering ball to help you choose the glyph. Mapping them to keys would be too much a immersion breaker for me.

The animated texture is quite vram (your graphics card memory) hungry. People with 1GB of VRAM were seen having issues with it. You can disable it in config.
Compression. GPU won't decompress each frame on the fly, so the CPU does it when Minecraft starts. There are `185` frames, each around `1100x1100` pixels. This gives `223 850 000`...
I'm pretty sure a texture pack could handle this ;)
The problem is the models are quite large and adding another model for every single point of origin... Maybe it's possible to extract the point of origin to only change...
