map (item) causing minecraft to crash. I tried everything and I learned that puzzle mod (this mod) is causing it on minecraft 1.20.4

This is very unlikely to have been caused by Puzzle, as the mod doesn't touch code even loosely related to maps. Could you send me a copy of your crash...

Newer Cull Leaves versions do support this better, but I haven't backported these changes to 1.20.1. I might backport it in the future, though :)
