I think it is a math symbol. It is used to denote a conjugate transpose of a matrix or operator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermitian_matrix), and is widely used in physics.

Well, nowadays you cannot really say a symbol is not a math symbol. Mathmatitians tend to use whatever they see, and they have seen every symbols on earth. :-p

I think the question is if \* is used to denote adjoint, then how to denote a complex conjugate (without transpose)? Plus, dagger looks cool ^^
