We decided not to implement this as most users don't need it and it's out of a YouTube front-end's scope.

I have tested several times with a stopwatch but can't find out any notable difference. What device are you using? Landscape -> Portrait -> Landscape -> Portrait takes about 4.5s...

I believe the issue should be fixed in 4.0.0
I think the better way is to simply delete the video from the feed. Mark as watched exists because you can't directly delete a video from feed in old design....
Can you explain with more details? I don't really get the point. For me it seems no change between remove and mark as watched in your scenario.
