I tried same setup and the current result is a less verbose error, "phpcs: Cannot read property 'toString' of null"

This continues as outstanding question for PHP 7.0+ versions. Use of [PHPMailer ](https://github.com/PHPMailer) or equivalent would seem to be best current workaround.
