That would be a good alternative solution. I think there already is an issue for this + i'll add this to the alternatives list now.
As it turns out it actually is some mod causing it as an incopatibility. Will try to isolate the one too.
It was Lithium. What a crossover. edit: fully sure about it now - happens with only lithium and capes.
The bug, as it turns out, also causes a slutter upon opening the config menu (loading the player preview?)
