As @visr and I discussed in person, this following solution seems the most straightforward: the Select button should automatically select the associated Layer in the Layers Panel.

Just to check: I suppose the geometry remains separate from the netCDF? Because if you need both reading and writing of UGRID files, I'd recommend publishing a separate UGRID package....
