Not that I had a direct answer to the question - I just want to mention that AppleIntelPIIXATA is [open source](https://opensource.apple.com/source/AppleIntelPIIXATA/) (maybe helpful in this context).

Just FYI, the project was honorably mentioned on the German [Freak Show podcast](https://freakshow.fm/fs261-bei-dir-piepts-wohl-nicht?t=07%3A38) at the end of June, so that may have contributed to the large number of downloads.
