Is there a way to disable/mute the console output?

You can change the verbosity of the output in the OpenNI.ini file. Have a look at /include/openni2_redist/$yoursystem/OpenNI.ini. Found this solution in https://github.com/RobotnikAutomation/ros_astra_camera/commit/17ebbbf33bb609457c341feb3916ff10de9da688
