The new mode is named "Distance Free"? I can't select two points on the same face. Is it normal? The old tool allowed for that. Also, the tests are failing.

To be honest, measurement between arbitrary (non-vertex) points is not so common. But there are some situations when it’s useful (quick approximate measure, no vertices in the desired locations, measuring...

All those disclaimers and warnings are worrying but if it's the only solution to this nasty issue for now then it might be worth applying it before the next release....
