Using Tufte features in a different theme

I've done this in a theme I made (https://github.com/EricMFink/akademicky). I forked this repo, then copied the relevant stuff (_plugins folder; tufte.scss; Gemfile; Rakefile; .config.yml) into my theme's repo.. Not sure...
