Plus Sodium has nothing to do with this, I tried again with Spectrum only.
I asked my friends to try again, and they did get the same results as I did in 1.8.5. Only the hover block will get this dark.  
Since mermaid gems can be used as a bucket of water in fusion shrines, I think placing these gems in a cauldron should be reasonable.
