I'd like to see this implemented, as well!
Just confirming I'm experiencing the same issue. It would be nice to have it fixed, since it's so fundamental for the functionality and using it as a Zettelkasten.
I'm sorry, I can't reproduce that: when I select text, the toolbar counter stays the same. Does that need to be configured somewhere? I'm using the most recent version (3.4.1).
