I've also noticed that subsequent attempts to change the date to the correct date fail, it stays at 12/31/69
Yes, we've added several. 
Still having this issue with dates defaulting to 12/31/1969 on some profiles.
I was able to reproduce it in my database by creating a new person, saving. Then went in and edited membership date to 03/22/2014. When I saved, it was 12/31/1969....
 Good call, but it matches. So far this is the only profile.
Update: Wondering if maybe it had to do with imported data, I went into the CSV I imported and made sure data was clean. Then cleared the people data and...
Yes it does. Immediately upon saving the new contact, the date I entered for membership date (03-22-2014) defaulted to "Active Member since December 31, 1969." 
Now it's getting weirder...I went back into the new profile and set the membership date again. I entered (and clicked on the pop up calendar) March 02, 2014. It saved...
