Interestingly, iris ([regrid_weighted_curvilinear_to_rectilinear](https://scitools.org.uk/iris/docs/latest/iris/iris/experimental/regrid.html?highlight=regrid_weighted_curvilinear_to_rectilinear#iris.experimental.regrid.regrid_weighted_curvilinear_to_rectilinear)) had similar problems with this particular model/grid, but [cdo remapbil](https://code.mpimet.mpg.de/projects/cdo/embedded/index.html#x1-5870002.12.1) handled the regirdding just fine.
