Thanks for the background and pointer to the sample code, will see how to use it in fwupd.

I've just noticed that firmware-attributes not working on some platforms, very likely have to use `dell-smbios` for some time until issue gets resolved. I'll start working on it.

The usb4 in dell-dock plugin uses specific [VID/PID](https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/blob/main/plugins/dell-dock/fu-dell-dock-common.h#L36) for device [probing](https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/blob/main/plugins/dell-dock/fu-plugin-dell-dock.c#L165). In your device list it looks like `thunderbolt` plugin was invoked, not the usb protocol written in `dell-dock`. Worth...

We can append `dell_dock` into `DisabledPlugins` line at `/etc/fwupd/daemon.conf`file, then the plugin will be prevented to probing devices. Presumably you still can update peripharal's nvm with `thunderbolt` plugin as long...

@hughsie do you mind if I add a commit to check the `tbt`/`usb4` device explicitly?

@droidben although the system firmware is compatible with XPS 17 9720 model but Linux is beyond the [scope ](https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/xps-17-9720-laptop/drivers)of supporting OS'es.

I think that'd be challenging to ask for the release for an unsupported (untested) device.

They haven't concluded the business plan for fwupd. The most immediate help for you might be Dell support service.

They have a separate release for this monitor at [dell com](https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=96dnt&oscode=ubt20&productcode=dell-u3421we-monitor&lwp=rt)
