Have you installed [vigembus](https://github.com/4yn/slidershim#extra-pointers) on your computer? If slidershim has been set up properly, windows should play the "usb device connected" sound effect when slidershim starts.

Side note, I've just noted that vigembus is now legacy software (oof), I'll keep my eye out for other gamepad emulation solutions in the future
