My gut reaction is that sounds reasonable. We could try to have different VMs that install different fonts to approximate different environments but I'm guessing that would be a significant...

No objection. gftools has diverged so far from the internal version that they feel like they aren't related anymore.

I don't want to update docs until we commit to the feature. Will send a PR for the proto file.

https://github.com/googlefonts/gftools/blob/proto_update/Lib/gftools/fonts_public.proto appears to have been updated in 513d9c1047, how convenient.

The case that seems particularly odd is where status is 200 but there are no font details. I tried a few urls (for Google Fonts, fonts.gstatic.com) that were status 200...
