Another approach is to directly access the database, but this will get rejected for the official repo. If I remember correctly, PlexKodiConnect is doing this.

Slyguy has a location where he hosts the extracted windevine binaries, but this isn't allowed due to the Widevine redistribution license. Not really an issue for a 3th party add-on...

Since you get the time-out almost instantly, I'm thinking about a too low timeout value in the code somewhere, like a value in ms instead of seconds or something?

This is a Kodi issue. You should report it on their bugtracker.
