Sorry my fault... rather than converting to SVG the nice software was embedding the png in an SVG. Image looks amazing but doesn't work. changed the image to 3 colors...

neither variation of "esc" or "escape" make a difference.

I found a clue... If I knew the source code I could probably find the spot. When I map Escape to ~ . It becomes shift-left escape which is correct....
